Punta Campanella is located in the UNESCO-protected scenic area, the far end of the Sorrento Peninsula that separates the Gulf of Naples from the Gulf of Salerno
Punta Campanella once served as a Saracen watchtower for pirate sightings, like the famous Torre Minerva perched on the cliff, where a bell was rung in case of alarm, likely giving rise to the name (Punta della Campanella!).
The path to reach the Tower, strictly on foot, is a charming itinerary along the “mythological” route of an ancient Greco-Roman mule track. It is still partially paved with Roman basalt that thins out towards lush Mediterranean vegetation, reaching acres of land cultivated with olive groves, lemon groves, fruit trees, and vegetable gardens, and a succession of terraces bordered by dry stone walls.
